Liberty 250 Review and Rating

Cigar Jesus Liberty 250 Toro 6x52

By Antonio N.

Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro
Binder: Connecticut Shade
Filler: Pennsylvania Broadleaf, Nicaraguan (Jalapa, Ometepe, Rum-Barrel-Aged Condega)

Construction/Presentation: A beautifully constructed toro with an oily chocolate brown Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, and 2-inch-long pigtail that hangs down the side of the body representing the fuse of a firecracker.  The wrapper has some small veins, seams are tight, and a soft closed foot.  The cigar band features Cigar Jesus in a fedora with golden wings, the foot band features three colors, red, white and blue ribbons to commemorate America’s 250th but the way that the ribbons are stacked here, it looks more like the French flag, which is fine since France played a pivotal role in our victory for independence.  Measurement of the ring gauge is closer to 50 than the listed 52.

Performance:  draw was perfect and produced billowy clouds of smoke.  The burn line was slightly uneven in the first third but nothing unmanageable, and self-corrected in the second third.

Flavor Notes: cocoa, coffee with cream, cherries, currants

Strength: mild+ to medium in first third.  2nd third settles into medium+ territory

Finish: the finish is creamy with no harshness

Comments: the Liberty 250 is a sophisticated blend, with a profile similar to the H. Upmann 180th Anniversary made by AJ Fernandez and Rafael Nodal, but at a fraction of the MSRP. I am not a fan of the inherent sweetness in Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper leaf; however, it works well here to balance out the cherry tartness.  The Connecticut Shade binder adds structure and complexity and gives the Liberty 250 its smooth creamy note and finish.  Overall, this is an excellent and refined cigar, medium+ to full bodied but with no harshness, I smoked it down to the nub at 8:00AM with my morning coffee.

The production run is limited to 1,776 cigars so get them while they last.

Smoke time was about 60 minutes.

Scoring: 30/30 for Construction/Performance 63/70 for Flavor Notes/Complexity = Final Score 93
